A new Methodist year and a new Zoom Bible study! Our autumn series (which should take us up to the start of Advent) is:
‘Lord, teach us to pray’ – a series on Prayers of the Bible
22nd September Week 1: The Prayer of Honest Agony
– 1 Samuel 1:9–20 & 2:1–10 (Hannah’s Anguish and Song)
– Moving from bitter weeping to a song of fierce, prophetic praise. God hears the prayers we cannot fully articulate
29th September Week 2: The Prayer of Radical Intercession
– Exodus 32:7–14 (Moses Pleads for Israel)
-Moses standing in the gap. What does it mean when scripture says God “relented”?
6th October Week 3: The Prayer of Radical Realism
– Psalm 13 and Psalm 88 (The Psalms of Lament)
– Giving permission to express holy complaint, anger, and grief directly to God.
20th October Week 4: The Prayer of Reluctant Submission
– Habakkuk 3:1–19 (Habakkuk’s Song of Trust)
– Praying when the world is falling apart and God’s answers don’t make sense.
3rd November Week 5: The Kingdom Alignment Prayer
– Matthew 6:9–13 (The Lord’s Prayer)
– Deconstructing the familiar to re-anchor its meaning.
10th November Week 6: The Prayer of Absolute Vulnerability
– Matthew 26:36–46 (Jesus in Gethsemane)
– A quiet, worshipful space to look at the immense love of Christ on display.
17th November Week 7: The Prayer for the Future Church
– John 17:15–26 (The High Priestly Prayer)
– Jesus prays specifically for us—those who would believe through the disciples’ message—focusing heavily on unity.
As we close the series before Advent, we are reminded that we are part of a massive, globally unified church that Jesus personally prayed for.
As ever, these studies are open to all. We learn together – none of us has all the answers but together we can discover new truths and rediscover old.
It isn’t necessary to attend every week – just join us as and when you can. We meet by Zoom. If you’re not sure about Zoom and haven’t given it a go before, then please ask me (Sharon) and I can help you. Joining a Zoom meeting is free. You don’t have to have a Zoom account, you just need a link (see below for the link we use), and a laptop, tablet (e.g. iPad) or smartphone.
We meet at 7.45pm for prayer before commencing the study at 8pm. We finish at 9pm.
