Autumnal Hopes – Jonquil

Animals learn to harvest before they hibernate!
While we secretly watch hungry squirrels as they scurry
Searching for the hazel nuts they’ve hidden, of late
Just beneath the soil undisturbed till now, no worry!

“All good gifts around us” – thus we can store
We’ll prepare enough, for colder times ahead!
Grandma’s recipes may provide much more
With pickles and preserves to compliment over bread.

By now the deciduous trees lose their foliage fast
Their golden display simply cannot last:
Orange and scarlet soon turn to rusty brown
Then all the earth will bear a dusty crown!

Everything seems rather sombre, yet always quite sober…
I muse – of course – it must be OCTOBER!
