Approaching Autumn – Jonquil
When the flower has done its blooming
Then the seed takes on its form
A miracle silent and unassuming
As it surely must – that’s the norm!
End of June and right through August
Daily swelling into fruit,
Undercover berries, hips and nuts –
That’s just the natural way to do it!
Have you ever noticed such activity unseen
In places where insect life will hide
Leaves spread a canopy above and between;
Butterflies do it country-wide.
Even the bees rest from daily journeys
Sipping nectar from such colourful flowers;
Off to their hives to make some honey
Knowing the process will take several hours!
But, now it has become September,
We’ll celebrate Michaelmas Day soon
It used to herald in the harvest, remember?
Gathered gleanings, such a BOON!
